Françoise Sagan was a French playwright, novelist and screenwriter.Bonjour Tristesse (Hello Sadness, in English) was first published in 1954, in French. The title is derived from a poem by Paul Éluard.

In 1958 Bonjour Tristesse was adapted to cinema.

The words Bonjour Tristesse were also written on the façade of Siza Vieira's apartment building in Kreuzberg, Berlin, giving it its name.
